History
With the rise of fox-hunting, beagles were shunted out of popularity by the Foxhound. And if not for the dedication of a few English farmers, we may have lost this breed altogether. In mid-1800's, Rev. Phillip Honeywood of Essex, England, established a pack of what is thought to be the precursor to the modern Beagle. A dog with very strong hunting skills. A fellow Englishman, Thomas Johnson, took Honeywood's dogs, and bred them to have looks as well as hunting ability. The Beagle made it's way to North America in 1876, and received official recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1886. About the Beagle: Beagles are amiable hounds, with neither aggressiveness or timidity. They make excellent hunting hounds as the drive to track small game is very strong. Because of this alertness and drive, Beagles are very popular in Field Trials. These dogs do best in a working home, and can be extremely stubborn. Intelligent hounds, they can be somebody's ideal companion and hunting partner, or somebody else's house pet nightmare. Beagles have a tendency to gain weight. Exercise, and lots of it is imperative, as well as proper feeding. Before
